Ukraine demands tougher line from German, French leaders towards Putin – Ambassador Melnyk

Ukraine's Ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk has said that at the meeting in "Normandy format" in Berlin, Ukraine expects a united tough line from leaders of Germany and France, Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande, with respect to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, the ambassador said that "it would be dangerous if the main purpose of the meeting in Berlin was only to get concessions from Ukraine concerning special status for Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as the electoral law, which was surprisingly suggested by Foreign Affairs Minister of France [Jean-Marc] Ayrault. "

Melnyk explained what Kyiv's expectations are from the German chancellor and the French president with respect to the Russian president.

"Ukraine demands a united hard line from leaders of Germany and France regarding Putin's crude pressure," Melnyk wrote about his interview on Twitter.

According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin should undertake "a clear commitment to improve the security situation."

The meeting of the leaders of the "Normandy format" (Germany, Russia, Ukraine and France) on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine's east will take place in Berlin on Wednesday.
