Rada supports adding 'anti-discrimination' provision to Labor Code

Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has finally added the "anti-discrimination" provision to the Labor Code of Ukraine.

Corresponding bill No.3442 on amending the Labor Code of Ukraine (concerning the harmonization of legislation on preventing and combating discrimination under the legislation of the European Union) was supported by 234 MPs during the parliamentary session on Thursday.

All in all, 108 of 119 Petro Poroshenko Bloc MPs in attendance voted for the bill, as did 65 of 72 People's Front deputies, 15 MPs of 21 Samopomich deputies, and all 14 Batkivschyna deputies.

Only one Radical Party of Oleh Liashko MPs voted in favor of the bill.

None of the 33 Opposition Bloc deputies in attendance voted for the bill, while 9 out of 10 Vidrodzhennia deputies supported the bill, as did eight People's Will MPs

Fourteen independent lawmakers voted for the bill, and 12 voted against.

When the amendments come into force, Article 21 "Equality of Labor Rights of Citizens of Ukraine" in the Labor Code will read as follows:

"Any discrimination in employment is prohibited, in particular, breaching the principle of equality of rights and opportunities, as is the direct or indirect restriction of the rights of employees based on race, color, political, religious and other beliefs, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, social and foreign origin, age, health, disability, suspicion or presence of HIV/AIDS, family and property status, family responsibilities, place of residence, membership in trade unions or other associations of citizens, participation in a strike, treatment or intention to address the court or other authorities to protect their rights and to provide support to workers to protect their rights, linguistic or other grounds not related to the nature of the work or the conditions of its execution.
