Two killed in artillery depot fire in Luhansk region

Two persons have reportedly been killed and another three have been injured in a fire that broke out at Ukrainian Armed Forces munitions depots in the town of Svatove, Luhansk region, the Ukrainian interior minister's advisor Zoryan Shkyriak has said.

"Unfortunately, the preliminary information available indicates that two people have been killed and another three have been injured," Shkyryak wrote on Facebook.

Spokesperson for the Ukrainian Interior Ministry's Luhansk region branch Tatyana Pohukai, for her part, put the number of people hurt as a result of the fire at four.

"Four injured servicemen have been delivered to a military hospital," she wrote on her Facebook account.

The blaze erupted at the Ukrainian Armed Forces' depots, which store around 3,500 tonnes of ammunition, at around 19:30 local time on Thursday. The fire area was some 300 meters by 300 meters.

The tentative information provided by the region's Governor Heorhiy Tuka indicates that the blaze was caused by a shot fired from a signal flare pistol.

Meanwhile, the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces is analyzing various theories behind the fire at the ammunition depots near Svatove in Luhansk region, including a possible terrorist attack, General Staff spokesman Vladyslav Selezniov has said.

"Different reasons are being examined, including a theory suggesting a terrorist act," Selezniov told the 112 Ukraine television station after being asked about the possible cause of the fire.
