Poroshenko signs decree on ensuring democratic, fair, transparent local elections on October 25

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed a decree On Organizing Democratic, Fair and Transparent Local Elections on October 25, 2015.

He did that at the Regional Development Council meeting in Kyiv on Wednesday.

"The October 25 local elections are held on the basis of a new law. As we promised and as was stated in the coalition agreement, the elections will be held on a proportionate basis with open lists. And the candidates' fate will depend on the people, not the whims of party leaders, on where they will put the candidates on the list. The number of votes received by a specific candidate will be the only thing that will determine whether the person will become a parliamentarian," the president said.

"Trading for seats is impossible with such rules. What's the point? Decisions are made by the people, the community, not party leaders. I am confident it is a drastic and big step in the fight against political corruption," Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko reiterated that the law for the first time in history describes the procedures for recalling deputies, not just the election procedure.

"Another important thing is that the total number of local council deputies will decrease considerably. In cities where the number of voters exceeds 90,000 we have fulfilled another promise, to hold mayoral elections in two rounds," Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko also said the European gender equality standard has also been fulfilled and 30% of the candidates are women.
