Yatseniuk orders security officials to tighten security measures in Ukraine before May holidays

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk has ordered the security and law-enforcement agencies to tighten security across the country before the May holidays.

"I have instructed the Ukrainian Security Service and the entire law enforcement system to tighten security measures in the country before the May holidays," Yatseniuk said during an intercom meeting with the Cabinet of Ministers in Kyiv on Friday.

He said the situation in the country is extremely difficult and the law enforcement agencies and the special services should ensure the safety of citizens and fight any manifestation of terrorism and separatism.

"There is no doubt that the anti-Ukrainian forces will try to use both the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and other holidays in May to destabilize the situation. The Interior Ministry together with the entire law enforcement system is ordered to exercise special control and introduce street patrols in order to make citizens' safety and public order the main priorities," Yatseniuk said.

He added that the Interior Ministry, the Ukrainian Security Service and National Guard officials are personally responsible for the fulfillment of the security measures.
