Kyiv hopes for foreign ministers' meeting in "Normandy format" in Berlin on January 21

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin has said he is hoping that the foreign ministers will meet in the "Normandy format" in Berlin on January 21.

"We are discussing the possibility of continuing these talks tomorrow. We are now preparing for it," Klimkin told a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.

Klimkin recalled that the next negotiations were expected to be held in Berlin on January during the next ministerial meeting in the "Normandy format."

"I made it very clear that I see a point to this meeting, if we achieve a result. The result is the most important thing for us now. At the same time, I reiterated that I am ready to continue these difficult talks," the minister said.

Klimkin said clear fulfillment of the entire package of the Minsk agreements is a priority for Kyiv.

"We can only achieve results on these conditions," Klimkin said.

He reiterated that a meeting between the heads of states in Astana in the "Normandy" format would only be possible after specific agreements are reached at the level of the Foreign Ministers of the relevant countries.

"A top-level meeting in Astana in the 'Normandy" format was discussed. The foreign ministers are working to prepare this meeting, and it should be aimed at a result, not the very fact of such a meeting. I said we had met on January 12 and I hope we will meet tomorrow, and the deputy foreign ministers, political directors, have also met. However, the meeting in Astana should produce a result, real de-escalation of the situation and steps to achieve permanent settlement. If we achieve such format, we will determine the time framework for such a meeting," Klimkin said.

The "Normandy format" of negotiations envisions four-party contacts between the leaders and foreign ministers of Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany, and also political directors on the settlement of the crisis in Ukraine. The first meeting in this format, in which Vladimir Putin, Francois Hollande, Angela Merkel, and Petro Poroshenko participated, took part in Normandy in June 2014 during the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the landing of the allies troops.

In October 2014, negotiations in this format took place in Milan at the ASEM summit.

The last phone conversation between the leaders of the four countries took place on December 22. The sides discussed the dates of the meeting of the contact group on the implementation of the Minsk agreements. Among the priority issues was the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the contact line by the sides in the conflict.

The foreign ministers of the four countries, for their part, regularly have contacts in this format. The last such meeting was held in Berlin on January 12. The ministers called for promote negotiations in the contact group and discussed the preparations for a meeting of the heads of the "Normandy four" countries in Astana.
