Ukraine upset Yanukovych still not on Interpol wanted list

Ukraine's prosecutor general on Monday claimed that Kyiv had received no substantial explanation why a Ukrainian request that Interpol put seven former top Ukrainian officials, including ex-president Viktor Yanukovych, on its wanted list, remains unsatisfied.

"Seven people with Viktor Yanukovych at the head are still not on the Interpol search list. They [Interpol] aren't saying anything in response," Vitaliy Yarema told reporters in Kyiv.

Two members of staff of the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office were told at Interpol's headquarters in Lyon, France, that the organization saw elements of political persecution behind the criminal action against Yanukovych.

"We gave them examples, material, that there were economic crimes there as well. But even if you put Yanukovych aside, there's [former interior minister Vitaliy] Zakharchenko, [ex-prosecutor general Viktor] Pshonka – what political persecution can there be of those people?" Yarema said.

"Nevertheless, Interpol isn't putting them on its search list," he said.
