EU-Ukraine Association Agreement should be signed at Vilnius summit, says Lithuanian Seimas speaker

Chairman of the Lithuanian Parliament Vydas Gedvilas has said that the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU will be signed at the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit, which will be held in November in Vilnius.

"The Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU will be signed, and not somewhere in the future, but this year during the summit in Vilnius," the Lithuanian speaker said at a meeting of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Seimas of Lithuania, the Sejm and Senate of Poland in Warsaw on Tuesday.

He said this event would be important for each of the three countries.

"The signing of the Association Agreement at the Vilnius summit will be important not only for Ukraine. The signing of this agreement will also be important for Lithuania as a strategic partner, and it will also be a significant event for Poland and for the whole of the European Union," Gedvilas said.

As reported, Kyiv hopes to sign the Association Agreement, including the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, with the EU during the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius in November 2013.

The EU said that the signing will be possible if Ukraine manages to implement a range of reforms. In particular, the EU wants Ukraine to do away with selective justice and implement the reforms mentioned in the Association Agenda.

The EU-Ukraine Association Agreement was initialed by the sides in 2012. So far technical checking of the draft agreement has been completed and the sides are preparing official translations of the document into Ukrainian and the languages of all EU Member States, following which the document is to be signed and ratified.
