Opposition factions in parliament have demanded that the Verkhovna Rada adopt a law on a mechanism for the impeachment of the Ukrainian president at the next plenary week.

"The UDAR, Batkivschyna and Svoboda parties have jointly tabled in parliament a bill on the mechanism for the impeachment of the Ukrainian president. Such a law should be adopted in Ukraine. We're demanding that it immediately be put on the agenda and adopted at the next meeting, on April 2," UDAR faction leader Vitali Klitschko said at a briefing in Kyiv on Friday.

As reported, on February 7, the leaders of opposition factions – Batkivschyna, UDAR and Svoboda – registered in the Verkhovna Rada a bill on the mechanism for the impeachment of the Ukrainian president.

The bill on the mechanism for the president's impeachment foresees that a fifth of the constitutional majority of parliament (90 MPs) can initiate the launch of the procedure for the president's impeachment, stating such a need in a written motion.

The further procedure will require 226 votes, as envisaged in the Constitution of Ukraine.
