Court confirms receipt of inquiries to deprive two MPs of parliamentary seats

The Higher Administrative Court of Ukraine has confirmed the receipt of two inquiries from Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, Volodymyr Rybak to deprive Batkivschyna parliamentary faction member Serhiy Vlasenko and Regions Party parliamentary faction MP Andriy Verevsky of their parliamentary seats.

The press service of the court told an Interfax-Ukraine reporter on Friday that judge Mykhailo Zaitsev will consider the inquiry on Vlasenko, and judge Inna Masla will consider the inquiry on Verevsky.

The press service did not disclose the argumentation of the inquiries and said that the court will not consider the cases urgently.

"Hearings on the inquiries have not been scheduled yet," the press service said.

On February 22, Vlasenko said that he had appealed to the Council of Lawyers of Ukraine to cancel his advocacy certificate in order to avoid any "political insinuation."

He noted that, according to the current legislation, a lawyer's right for advocacy is cancelled from the day of filing an appeal to cancel his advocacy certificate. He added that still he has the right to defend Tymoshenko.

Vlasenko has emphasized numerous times that he is Tymoshenko's defender, and not her lawyer.

Earlier on Friday, Regions Party MP Volodymyr Oliynyk said that one should not speak about a selective approach in the issue of depriving Vlasenko of his parliamentary seat, as a member of the Svoboda parliamentary faction had asked the parliament to deprive Verevsky of his parliamentary seat.

"The reason [for the request] is the same – while being a people's deputy he runs business entities, which is forbidden by the law on holding more than one office. As far as I know, the Verkhovna Rada chairman sent to the court an inquiry on the Verevsky case," Oliynyk said.
