Prison service permits Cox, Kwasniewski to visit Tymoshenko on Monday, says defense lawyer

Observers from the European Parliament - ex-president of the European Parliament Pat Cox and ex-president of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski - intend to meet with former Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko in the Central Clinical Hospital in Kharkiv on Monday, according to her defense lawyer Serhiy Vlasenko.

"As far as I know, the plane arrives at around 1400, and they intend to go straight to a meeting with Yulia Volodymyrivna [Tymoshenko]," Vlasenko told Interfax-Ukraine.

The lawyer said he also planned to be present at the meeting, but didn't know yet if the prison service would allow this.

The state penitentiary service reported that it gave Cox and Kwasniewski permission to meet with Tymoshenko in hospital on Monday, the press service reported.

The European Parliament appointed Cox and Kwasniewski its observers of Tymoshenko's court proceedings. The mission started on June 11 under an agreement between Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and European Parliament President Martin Schulz.

The mission mandate was broadened later on. The monitors also directed their attention to former Interior Minister of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko and ex-Acting Defense Minister Valeriy Ivaschenko, as well as preparations for the parliamentary election in Ukraine.

On October 2, Kwasniewski and Cox suspended their monitoring for the period of the Ukrainian parliamentary election campaign.
