Readiness to negotiate, not confrontation, should be the basis for uniting Syrian opposition - Lavrov
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov believes that outside players in the Syrian conflict will not succeed in uniting the Syrian opposition because they are trying to do it on a wrong basis that calls for further standoff between the opposition and the ruling regime.
"We see how hard it is for them to unite the opposition in principle. Perhaps, the reason is that they are trying to do it on a platform that calls for further armed confrontation," Lavrov told a press conference after talks with his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Amr in Cairo on Monday.
"If they attempt to do the same, bring all the opposition groups together on the basis of their readiness to negotiate for the sake of their country's future, they will probably achieve better results," he said.
