The principle of "nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine" is essential now, especially after U.S. President Donald Trump's latest statement on Russia and ending its war against Ukrainians, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has said on Thursday.

The "nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine" has never been more important, especially in the last hours after President Trump's statement, she said at the panel discussion "Ukraine: The Road Ahead" on the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

At the same time, Metsola wondered whether this will mean that those member states that may have been more reluctant than others to pursue sanctions against Russia will change course.

She also emphasized that it is neither in the EU's nor the United States' interest for Russia to control Kyiv. The European Parliament President noted the importance of unity and determination amid entering a new phase of discussions with the new United States administration.

If Trump's post was a launching pad for a new course of discussions, they should take place, but nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine, Metsola said.

As reported, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Vladimir Putin to conclude an agreement to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible, otherwise he will impose high taxes, tariffs and sanctions.
