An investigation has been launched into the execution of two Ukrainian prisoners of war by the occupiers in the Volnovakha district (Donetsk region), the Prosecutor General's Office reported.

"According to recent data, on January 3, 2024, during the assault on the positions of Ukrainian troops near the village of Vremivka in the Volnovakha district, the occupiers captured two Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemen. The prisoners were taken out of the dugout at gunpoint and shot point-blank in the head. To be sure of their death, the enemy fired several more shots," the Telegram channel reported on Monday.

It is noted that the execution of prisoners of war is a serious violation of the Geneva Conventions and is classified as a grave international crime.

Under the procedural leadership of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor's Office, a pretrial investigation has been initiated in criminal proceedings on the fact of committing a war crime that resulted in the death of people (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

Investigative actions are being carried out aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the crime and the persons involved in its commission.
