TIME names Diia one of the world's best inventions
TIME has named Diia as one of the world's best inventions in 2024, according to Deputy Prime Minister for Innovations, Education, Science, and Technology, and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov.
"Every year, TIME evaluates 200 products that enhance millions of lives and drive revolutionary change. Diia has been recognized in the Apps & Software category of TIME's Best Inventions 2024," Fedorov shared on Telegram on Wednesday.
The TIME ranking highlighted Diia's digital marriage registration process.
"Since September, Ukrainian citizens have been able to get married in a most unusual way: via Diia, the country's statewide app, which has more than 20 million users. The system is simple, if unromantic: One partner proposes through the app, and the other is sent a notification. If the second party says yes within 14 days, the two agree on a date for a video call wedding, complete with officiant, on the Webex platform. It might sound like an austere way to profess one's love, but it was designed to help the many Ukrainian couples who are physically separated by Russia's invasion of the country carry on with their lives. More than 1.1 million Ukrainians proposed using the tech in the first month it was available, and 435 couples married in that timeframe," TIME said.
Fedorov commented, "This digital state initiative, which began as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's vision, continues to demonstrate effectiveness on the international stage. In just five years, Diia has evolved from a document-storage app into a true super app. We were the first to fully digitize the marriage process and equalize electronic and paper documents." According to the Ministry of Digital Transformation, over 21 million Ukrainians now use Diia.
"This achievement symbolizes global recognition of Ukraine as a digital leader. Thank you to everyone who shares this journey with us. Together, we're creating a digital future," Fedorov concluded.
