Russia trying NATO's determination, unity by violating its airspace, Allies should give firm response – Sybiha
Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andriy Sybiha has described the cases of Russian objects violating the airspace of NATO countries as "provocative and escalating actions."
"There are already several cases of violation of the airspace of neighboring countries, NATO countries, by Russian objects. We believe that Russia thereby tests both the determination and unity of NATO. Therefore, there should be a firm, decisive response, a joint one, by the Allies to such provocative and escalating actions of Russia," he said at a joint press conference with his U.S. and UK counterparts in Kyiv on September 11.
The Ukrainian foreign minister said Russia is increasingly hitting facilities close to the NATO border, particularly objects that are close to Ukraine's nuclear plants. Sybiha also emphasized that the Russian forces have also started hitting Ukrainian underground shelters, which are very close to the Western border.
"Let me remind you that in our security agreement between Ukraine and Poland there is a clause that provides for a practical phase of consultations between the Allies to study the possibility of shooting down missiles over Ukrainian territory. And we believe that this would be a worthy and correct step in this direction," the minister said.
On September 7, the Latvian Defense Ministry said that a Russian military drone crashed in the Rezeknes region, eastern Latvia. According to the Latvian army, the drone flew into the country's airspace from Belarus.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha then called on NATO countries to use air defenses against Russian missiles and drones over Ukraine.
