Zelenskyy: Russia blackmails world with catastrophe at ZNPP, only plant's return under Ukrainian control to mean compliance with safety standards
Russian invaders have been controlling the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) for more than two years, which means a fundamental threat to the radiation safety of all of Europe, only the return of the plant under Ukraine's control will mean full compliance with all safety standards, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
"For more than two years, Russian occupiers have been controlling the largest nuclear power plant in Europe - the Zaporizhia NPP. And invariably, the Russian presence poses a fundamental threat to the radiation safety of our country, all of Europe, and the world," Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel on Monday.
He noted that the Russian Federation is blackmailing the world with the threat of a catastrophe at the Zaporizhia NPP and is using the plant's territory as a platform for striking Nikopol and nearby communities, and is also storing military equipment and ammunition there.
"Only the return of the plant to Ukrainian control will ensure full compliance with all safety standards and normalize the situation around the ZNPP," Zelenskyy stressed.
"For decades, Ukraine has maintained the highest level of safety at its nuclear facilities and will continue to do so. However, this requires an end to Russia's criminal presence at the ZNPP," the president concluded.
