Ukraine initiates restriction of Russian gas transit through Nord Stream 1 – GTSOU head

Ukraine is actively negotiating and consulting with European and U.S. partners on limiting Russian gas supplies to Europe via Nord Stream 1, Director General of Gas Transmission System Operation of Ukraine LLC (GTSOU) Serhiy Makogon said on ICTV on Friday.

"We welcome the sanctions against Nord Stream 2 and propose to limit Nord Stream 1, because there are currently free capacities in Poland and Ukraine to provide additional transit through our gas pipeline," the head of the GTSOU said.

According to him, the preservation of the transit of Russian gas through the Ukrainian GTS in the conditions of war is an extremely important factor, which is an additional guarantee for the preservation of Ukraine's gas transport infrastructure from destruction by Russian aggressors.

"We do not have a separate gas supply infrastructure for local consumers. Our whole system works as a single one, and transit and transportation is carried out through the same gas pipelines. Therefore, for us, transit during the war is a kind of air defense system," Makogon said.

As he said, since the beginning of the war, the transit of Russian gas through the GTS of Ukraine has amounted to 109 million cubic meters per day, which corresponds to the contracted volumes.
