Zelensky hopes it will be possible to agree on gas transit from Jan 1, sign contract for more than year

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky sees opportunities to reach an agreement on a new contract for transit of Russian gas to Europe and signing it for more than one year.

"More likely. I'm sure we have more chances to sign it with better conditions than before our representatives discussed," Zelensky said at a briefing for Ukrainian media in Paris at night, asked about how likely it is that transit will still be extended from January 1.

The president indicated that much time was devoted to this issue at a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Paris.

"I don't want to say all the details, but the contract for one year is not really mentioned. Everyone took it off the discussion. That is, for so many years," he said.

Zelensky said that he himself insisted on the most ambitious conditions favorable to Ukraine and Europe – an agreement for ten years.

"It is very difficult when one side insists on one year, and we insist on ten years. I think we will find something in the middle," he explained.

Zelensky said that "in principle, the question of three billion that we won was lifted."

"Our position is simple: we are ready to take gas. This is a compromise that we are ready to make. Because we need. Why not?" he stressed.
