U.S. and allies to consider additional sanctions against Russia if it meddles in Ukraine's elections – Mitchell

Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell has said that if Russia intervenes in elections in Ukraine, the U.S. and its allies will consider the issue of imposing additional sanctions.

Answering a question about the possibility of imposing new sanctions against Russia in case of interference in the elections in Ukraine, at a press conference after a meeting with Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko on Wednesday, he said the U.S. and its allies clearly stated that military or cyber interference in the elections is unacceptable.

The U.S. imposed sanctions and will continue coordination with its allies to impose additional sanctions if necessary, Mitchell added.

He also said the precondition for lifting the sanctions could be the end of Russia's aggression in Donbas and the withdrawal of its troops.

The U.S. is open to dialogue with Russia, but we will raise the price until Russia makes a choice to end the aggressive policy, the assistant secretary of state said.
