Ukrainian file hosting service ex.ua announces its closure

The Ukrainian file hosting service ex.ua has informed about the decision to terminate its operations and asked all users to remove the files from their archives on ex.ua before November 30, 2016.

"Ex.ua resource has decided to terminate its operations. In the past year ex.ua faced direct threats and blackmailing [including at the national level] and DDOS attacks. These actions jeopardize personal information and personal files of users stored on the resource," ex.ua said in a statement posted on its website on Wednesday.

The service has been operating legally, but not everyone liked this interpretation of the law.

"Ex.ua observes copyrights and confirmed it by quick reaction to any violation on the resource. The service does not approve the copyright distribution and management system we have today," the service said.

Ex.ua said that recently legislative initiatives in combating piracy have signs of uncivilized lobbying.

"The new bill sent to the president for signature makes its observation unviable. It is against those who tried to observe it. It would stimulate neglecting of copyrights. It is not beneficial," the service said.

Only foreign companies would see benefits from the new bill, while Ukrainian copyright holders and Ukrainian budget would see losses, while Ukrainian viewers would have less freedom of choice.

"We believe that the things that would happen in Ukraine after the adoption of the bill strongly harm its interests," ex.ua said.

Ex.ua has always identified itself as the national file hosting service and does not plan to change the domain zone and territory.
