Canada's Bombardier could place locomotive production facilities in Ukraine

The Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine is holding talks with Canada's Bombardier planes and trains manufacturer on the opportunity of placing locomotive production facilities in Ukraine, Infrastructure Minister Andriy Pyvovarsky has said.

"Now we're communicating with Bombardier on its arrival to Ukraine to produce traction [units]," he told reporters on Tuesday.

He said that the arrival of foreign investors is possible if reforms in Ukrzaliznytsia are conducted.

"They are ready to come with the railway transport reform, which would permit private traction. When we started discussing the new law, representatives of all global traction manufacturers came to us during one month to make sure that we're speaking about the reform seriously," the minister said.

Pyvovarsky said that today Ukraine has a large potential for production of traction rolling stock, taking into account large deterioration of locomotives.

The minister said that the most interesting form of cooperation for investors is JV or investment into the neglected plant, as the cost of greenfield construction is very large.

As reported, Siemens is not currently interested in creating a joint venture (JV) to manufacture locomotives in Ukraine as the company is only interested in spare parts supplies and hopes that private traction would appear.

Bombardier manufactures planes, trains and trams. Its key divisions are Bombardier Transportation and Bombardier Aerospace.
