Ukraine restarts tank deliveries to Thailand – source

Ukraine has restarted deliveries of Oplot new-generation tanks to Thailand, which were suspended in 2014.

A second batch of five Oplot tanks, shipped in spring, arrived at Port Sattahip a few days ago, Interfax-Ukraine has learned.

The first five tanks were exported to Thailand in early 2014, an Interfax-Ukraine source said.

"If the Malyshev state-run company works smoothly, another batch of 39 tanks is likely to be delivered to Thailand in compliance with the contract," he said.

The Oplot tank has been developed by the Kharkiv-based Morozov Design and Engineering Bureau. The first two Oplot tanks entered service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces in May 2009. An over $200 million contract for the delivery of 40 Oplot tanks to Thailand was signed in 2011. The Malyshev company started implementing the contract in April 2011. Investment in the tanks' serial production amounts to $30 million, according to the company management.

Expert estimated of the Oplot tank has an 80% processing complexity coefficient, one of the world's highest among new combat vehicles. The tank has advanced systems of protecting communication and control gear, including an active system for countering smart weapons, as well as night vision instruments and a remote- controlled machine-gun.

The state defense corporation Ukroboronprom earlier announced plans to guarantee supplies under suspended contracts by way of a scheduled increase in its production capacities in 2015-16.

Ukroboronprom sees the increase in the exportation of home-made new-generation weapons and military hardware as a source to draw resources for an accelerated modernization the armed forces without an additional load on the budget.
