EU imposes sanctions on Lukashenko's regime - von der Leyen

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the European Union is imposing sanctions on the so-called regime of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko for complicity in Russia's war with Ukraine.

"We will target the other aggressor in this war, Lukashenko's regime, with a new package of sanctions, hitting their most important sectors. All these measures come on top of the strong package presented yesterday, agreed by our international partners," she said in Brussels.

She said this will stop their exports of products from mineral fuels to tobacco, timber, cement, iron and steel. Export restrictions we have imposed on dual-use goods for Russia will also extend to Belarus. This will also allow avoiding any risks of circumvention of our measures against Russia, she detailed.

In addition, the EU will apply sanctions against those Belarusians who "help Russia in military operations."
