Poroshenko expects CEC to work effectively to counter Russia's meddling in Ukraine election campaign

Ukraine should have effective means of countering Russia's interference in the election campaign, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said.

"From the point of view of our special bodies and from the point of view of the information of our partners, Russia is going to actively meddle in the election campaign both through disinformation systems, electoral rigging systems, and through hacker cyberattack systems," he said at a meeting with the newly elected members of the Central Election Commission (CEC) in Kyiv on Monday.

In this regard, the president noted that he hopes for the effective work of the CEC "so that we have effective countermeasures to protect the choice of the Ukrainian people."

According to Poroshenko, it is also necessary to effectively counteract the bribery of voters.

"Today this technology is also one of the forms of interference in elections through money that comes from the east, from Russia. I hope both for decisive actions by the Central Election Commission and for the need to make changes in legislation that will significantly complicate this process and will increase responsibility," he said.

Poroshenko also said that draft legislative proposals on strengthening responsibility for interfering in the electoral process are already ready for consideration by the National Reform Council, and if they are reviewed with the participation of CEC members, he is ready to submit them to parliament and "define this bill as urgent."
