Kyiv should use Putin's acknowledgement on holding 'referendum' in Crimea when preparing suits with intl. courts – Gerashchenko

Ukrainian diplomats and lawyers should use the statement of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Moscow's organization of a pseudo-referendum in Crimea in preparation of claims in international courts, First Deputy Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, Ukraine's representative in the humanitarian subgroup of the Trilateral Contact Group, Iryna Gerashchenko, has said.

"The most important thing that was voiced at the press conference [between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump] is Putin's full confession, who admitted that Russia had organized a "referendum" in Crimea. Our lawyers and diplomats should use this confession in the preparation of claims for international courts," Gerashchenko said on Facebook on Tuesday.

Also, according to her, Putin's acknowledgement that Trump does not recognize the annexation of Crimea is also very important.

"The unity and unanimity of the Senate and Congress, the State Department, the Pentagon, the White House, Republicans and Democrats in the key issues is important for us: non-recognition of the annexation of Crimea, Donbas occupation, the violation of Ukraine's borders, the responsibility of the Russian Federation for this. Trump's signature under the statement of the NATO summit, which is tough on Russia, is important for us. And a meeting with President Poroshenko, before the summit with Putin, when all the bilateral meetings were canceled," she said.

Further, in her opinion, there should be an activation of the dialogue with the U.S. in all directions, including inter-parliamentary, inter-party, interdepartmental, "reminding our strategic partner of their obligations and guarantees of Ukraine's security that gave up the world's third nuclear potential."

"And the most important that the fate of Ukraine will never be resolved without Ukraine, we will not agree to this," she added.

As reported, on July 16, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a press conference following talks with Trump in Helsinki, Finland, that U.S. President Donald Trump stands firmly that the annexation of Ukraine's Crimea by Russia was illegal. "Well, the posture of President Trump on Crimea is well known, and he stands firmly by it. He continued to maintain that it was illegal to annex it. Our viewpoint is different. We held a referendum in strict compliance with the U.N. Charter and the international legislation," Putin said.
