Ninety percent of abuses in social sphere concern health care - NABU

Most abuses in the social sphere recorded by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) are related to corruption offenses in the health care system - about 90% of over UAH 120 million worth of losses caused to the state, the NABU's press service has reported.

According to the press service, most often the issue concerns corruption schemes based on the abuse of office by officials for the purpose of appropriating or squandering property.

Among such facts, the NABU noted violations in the procurement of ambulances for state subvention funds for Zaporizhia Regional Clinical Hospital, when the vehicle specifications did not meet the requirements of Ukrainian standards, and the further operation of such vehicles was impossible, resulting in UAH 13 million worth of damage caused to the state.

In August 2017, NABU detectives notified the chief doctor of Zaporizhia Regional Hospital of the suspicion in committing crimes. In early March 2018, the indictment against three persons likely involved in the implementation of the corruption scheme (including the chief doctor of the hospital) was sent to the court.

In addition, the NABU also noted the seizure of budget funds in an especially large amount during the construction of a new medical and diagnostic building of the Okhmatdyt National Children's Specialized Hospital in 2011-2012.
