Poroshenko greets Aliyev on winning Azerbaijani presidential elections, invites him to Kyiv

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko has congratulated incumbent President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on his victory in the early presidential elections held on Wednesday, April 11.

"I sincerely congratulate Ilham Aliyev on a confident victory in the presidential elections in Azerbaijan! I believe the Ukrainian-Azerbaijani strategic partnership will become even stronger," Poroshenko wrote on Twitter.

The Ukrainian president also invited his Azerbaijani counterpart to visit Ukraine. "I look forward to seeing President Aliyev in Kyiv!" Poroshenko added.

As reported, incumbent Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is winning the early presidential election with 86% of the vote with 92% of the ballots counted. The turnout was 74.5%.

Aliyev has been president of Azerbaijan since 2003. According to the 2016 amendments to the country's constitution, the president of Azerbaijan is elected for a 7-year term.
