Issue of deploying peacekeepers to Donbas should be resolved diplomatically

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland believes that a UN peacekeeping force in Donbas can help resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine, but the issue of deploying the force should be decided diplomatically.

"That would be terrific. But I think the UN peacekeepers come at the end of a diplomatic process... There's a lot of work to be done to get there, but if we can get to a place where there are UN peacekeepers, it is very important for us to be clear about the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the borders of Ukraine," she said on Saturday, February 17, at a Ukrainian lunch organized by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation as part of the Munich Security Conference, when asked whether peacekeepers in Donbas can resolve the conflict.

According to the minister, Canada is supporting any peacekeeping solution.

Freeland added that it was important not to get used to the presence of the conflict in Ukraine: "It's very important that we not become resigned to the status quo... At the end of the day, I think it depends on Russia, and is Russia prepared to leave Ukraine."
