MPs, Volker discuss settlement of conflict in Donbas

A group of Ukrainian MPs held a meeting with U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker on Thursday and discussed with him the settlement of the situation in eastern Ukraine, Bloc of Petro Poroshenko MP Dmytro Lubinets has said.

"Today a group of people's deputies of Ukraine held a meeting with U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker. Ahead of Volker's meeting with Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov, which will be held tomorrow, we discussed possible options for resolving the military conflict in eastern Ukraine. We also spoke about violations of human rights and the absence of mobile communication on temporarily occupied territory," Lubinets wrote on his Facebook page.

According to him, Volker stressed the need to restore control over the Ukrainian-Russian state border, without which it is impossible to reintegrate occupied territories.

The MP also noted that the United States supports the idea of deploying a peacekeeping mission to Donbas.

"This would create the foundation on which it would be possible to hold local elections, grant amnesty, introduce the provision on the special status of Donbas and implement the Minsk agreements. Following these processes, as the agreements say, these territories would be returned under Ukraine's control," he said.

The parliamentarian said that he had invited Volker and U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch to visit Novotroitske, the largest checkpoint in the south of Donetsk region, "so that U.S. diplomats could assess the consequences of the war."

Lubinets also posted photos of the meeting and noted that it had been attended by an independent deputy, the head of the Verkhovna Rada committee on foreign affairs, Hanna Hopko, Will of the People group deputy Serhiy Shakhov, Vidrodzhennia group deputy Valeriy Pysarenko, Batkivschyna faction deputy and head of the Verkhovna Rada committee on human rights Hryhoriy Nemyria, and deputy head of the People's Front faction Andriy Teteruk.

Volker also said that he had met with Ukrainian parliamentarians and discussed the settlement of the conflict in Donbas.

"[We] met with Ukrainian MPs to brief them on talks with Russia, discuss parliament's essential role in implementing any peace agreement, and how Ukraine should do everything possible to reach out to its citizens living in areas under Russian control," he wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

As reported, Volker arrived in Kyiv on January 23. He canceled his planned trip to Donbas due to bad weather. On January 26, Volker intends to meet with Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov in Dubai.
