Trump administration approves sales of lethal weapons to Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump administration on Wednesday, December 20, approved the sale of Model M107A1 Sniper Systems and associated equipment to the tune of $41.5 million to Ukraine, The Washington Post news website reported.

There has been no approval to export heavier weapons Kyiv is asking for, such as Javelin antitank missiles, the newspaper wrote.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker applauded the Trump administration's decision in a statement to the Post: "I'm pleased the administration approved the sale of defensive lethal arms to Ukraine," Corker said. "This decision was supported by Congress in legislation that became law three years ago and reflects our country’s longstanding commitment to Ukraine in the face of ongoing Russian aggression."

At the same time, CNN reported quoting U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the State Department notified Congress on December 13 that it had approved an export license, which allows Ukraine to buy certain light weapons and small arms from US manufacturers. However, the U.S. government is not selling the Ukrainian government these weapons," she said.
