Polish Ambassador visits Ukrainian Foreign Ministry in connection with Waszczykowski's statements

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has expressed disappointment to the Polish Ambassador to Ukraine Jan Pieklo in connection with the recent statements by Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski regarding Ukraine.

The Polish ambassador was invited to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry in connection with the statements of Waszczykowski in Ukraine in an interview with the weekly newspaper "wSieci" dated July 3, 2017, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said in its comments on Wednesday.

"During the meeting, the Polish diplomat said that Ukraine was disappointed with the recent statements by the Polish foreign minister regarding our state against the backdrop of continuing active dialogue at a high level," the commentary says.

The Foreign Ministry said that Ukraine and Poland should work together to build a common European future, "and not to lay down each other conditions."

"The European choice for Ukraine is not only foreign policy, but also a daily bloody struggle and painstaking hard work," the commentary says.

In this regard, Kyiv drew attention to the incorrectness of statements by Minister Waszczykowski on the situation in the east of Ukraine.

"It was noted that it is the Ukrainian people who pay a very high price - the price of hundreds of lives of their best representatives for independence, for the civilizational choice of development, and also for preventing Russian troops from entering the territory of Poland and other EU countries," the Foreign Ministry said.

Also, Kyiv drew attention to the need for a more restrained approach of the Polish politician to sensitive historical issues. "Repeated appeals have been mentioned not to politicize the sensitive pages of the joint historical past, which can be used by a third party to the detriment of the interests of Ukraine and Poland," the commentary says.

The Ukrainian side said that the evaluation of certain historical events is the task of historians, "and in the context of Ukrainian-Polish relations, these issues are dealt with by the Forum of Historians and the Partnership Forum."

"In politics, every comparison has its own meaning, and, given the mutually beneficial strategic partnership and trusting relations between our countries, it was not quite tactful to compare Greece and Macedonia," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.
