Mercedes driver killed in Kyiv car blast – police

The Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine in Kyiv confirms the death of a man as a result of a car bombing in the Solomyansky district of Kyiv that took place on Tuesday morning.

"At 8:16 the law enforcers received a message that the car Mercedes exploded at the crossroads of Solomyanska and Oleksiyivska streets ... As a result of the accident, the driver was killed," the Kyiv Police Liaison Department said.

The law enforcement agency noted that investigative and operational groups, forensic experts, explosives technicians, ambulance doctors and rescuers are working at the scene. The causes and circumstances of the explosion are being established.

"The accident has been duly registered and the issue of its legal qualification is being decided," the police chief in the capital said.

Earlier, a number of media reported that on Tuesday morning in the Solomyansky district of Kyiv, a Mercedes car exploded, as a result of which one person was killed and two more were injured.

"At the time of the explosion, the driver was in the cabin, the car's parts scattered around the perimeter of 100 meters and affected other cars. The ambulance and rescuers of the Emergency Service are trying to free the driver. In the meantime, one person was killed. There are two casualties," the local Internet ezine dtp.kiev.ua said.
