Pressure from West, expectations about battling corruption, could be factors in Nasirov case

Pressure from the West, which expects progress in Ukraine's battle against corruption, may become a factor in the case of head of the State Fiscal Service, Roman Nasirov, discharged from duties, Global Strategies Institute Director Vadym Karasiov has said.

"What kind of pressure could there be? Perhaps, from Ukrainian authorities in order prevent [the case against Nasirov] from entering the danger zone, because it could shake the entire foundation of the state authority. Maybe, from the grassroots level, from activists, and the street, as it took place. I also don't rule out the role played by several foreign embassies, or that activists are coordinating their efforts with these embassies," Karasiov said.

The political expert said the corruption case against Nasirov could be linked to the EU's decision to grant Ukrainians visa-free travel, with failure to address corruption linked to not granting this status.

As earlier reported, Kyiv's Solomyansky District Court on March 7 remanded acting head of Ukraine's State Fiscal Service to 60 days in pretrial confinement, setting a bail at UAH 100 million.
