Poroshenko looks forward to finalization, prompt adoption of draft law on High Justice Council

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko calls areas of judicial reform as priority ones, adoption of the amended draft law "On the High Council of Justice" in general and the bill "On the Constitutional Court of Ukraine."

"The president expressed hope that the bill "On the High Council of Justice" will be finalized based on the comments and adopted the next week. Another priority the president called developed by the Council for Judicial Reform and supported by the Venice Commission the draft law "On the Constitutional Court of Ukraine", which sets competitive procedures for the selection of judges of the Constitutional Court, introduces innovations - the institute of a constitutional complaint [...] No less important, according to Poroshenko, is a follow-on revision and adoption of a new procedural legislation," the press service of the president said on the basis of taking the oath by the judges in his presence.

These judges were appointed during the transition period of the judicial reform. According to the Council of Judges of Ukraine, due to the dismissal of a significant number of previous judges, there is a lack of personnel at courts of various instances at this stage.

Poroshenko stressed that the new judges will first begin their work in the conditions of the amended Basic Law of Ukraine. The judges of the new Supreme Court, where there is a competition now, will be next in turn to take an oath. Over the next three months, the candidates who have submitted their documents for participation in the competition, will go through several stages of selection. The president called on the commission to be honest, impartial and open, and the public - to closely monitor the progress of the competition.
