Over half of Ukrainians back Ukraine's accession to EU - poll

More than half of Ukrainians - 51% - favor the country's accession to the European Union and 19% to the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, as is evident from a public opinion poll of 2,400 respondents that the Rating sociological survey service conducted under a contract with the International Republican Institute in all regions of Ukraine, except for Donbas, from September 28 to October 7, 2016.

Asked what they would prefer if Ukraine could become a member of only one international economic union, 51% chose the EU, 19% the Customs Union, 14% gave a different answer, and 17% were undecided.

The share of respondents choosing the EU was the highest in the western and central parts of Ukraine (79% and 59% respectively), while only 37% of respondents favored the EU in the southern and 24% in the eastern parts of the country, with 22% in the southern and 40% in the eastern regions choosing the Customs Union.

The poll's margin of error is within 2.0%.
