Statement: Rada declares Russia's newly elected Duma illegitimate

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has declared the elections to the Russian State Duma and its newly elected composition illegitimate due to the fact that the voting was also held in the temporarily occupied Crimea.

A total of 264 lawmakers voted to pass a relevant statement at a plenary session on Tuesday, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported.

In particular, given the fact of holding the illegitimate elections to the State Duma (lower house) of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on the territory of Crimea and Sevastopol temporary occupied by Russia on September 18, 2016, the Verkhovna Rada sees these elections as a breach of the law and the Constitution of Ukraine, the main principles and norms of international law, the UN Charter, the Budapest Memorandum, the UN resolution on Ukraine's territorial integrity, and other international legal acts, the parliament said in a statement.

"The Verkhovna Rada does not recognize the legitimacy of the elections to the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of the 7th convocation, their results and legal consequences, and accordingly, its makeup, powers, acts and resolutions," reads the statement.

In this statement, the Ukrainian parliament also urged the international community to act in a similar manner. In particular, the Verkhovna Rada appealed to the Security Council and the General Assembly of the UN, parliaments of foreign states, international parliamentary assemblies and organizations not to recognize the legitimacy of the elections to the State Duma of the 7th convocation and, accordingly, its composition and any resolutions passed by it.
