Attack on Odesa journalists needs to be addressed politically

Attacks on journalists in Ukraine have become more frequent, and a recent attack on a crew of Odesa local TV Channel 7 on Tuesday, and the situation needs to be addressed politically, Ukrainian Information Policy Minister Yuriy Stets.

"Attacks on journalist have increased recently, especially in the regions. The situation definitely needs certain political solutions, therefore the Information Ministry Policy plans to ask the National Police to investigate such cases in the most transparent and quickest way," Stets said in a statement, which was published by the ministry's press service on Wednesday.

A shotgun was used to shoot the Channel 7 crew near its office in Odesa on May 3, after which the National Police announced an interception plan.

As reported, two cameramen and a journalist were injured in the attack. Their injuries were "very serious," their colleagues said. They received urgent medical assistance on the spot. Later reports said that police had identified the owner of a Honda car and the shotgun, which was used to shoot the TV journalists. He was a resident of the city of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi in Odesa region.

Channel 7 is one of the oldest TV channels in Odesa. At various times, it was affiliated to his ex-mayors of Odesa Ruslan Bodelan, Eduart Hurvits, and Oleksiy Kostusev. Now the channel is associated with businessman Adnan Kivan.
