Ukrainian, Cypriot presidents discuss extension of EU sanctions against Russia, prospects for visa-free regime for Ukrainians

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades have discussed the extension of the EU sanctions against Russia and the prospects for the introduction of visa-free regime by the EU for Ukraine.

"The firm and principled position of the entire European Union, with your active participation in the matter of sanctions for the failure to implement the Minsk agreements, the extension of sanctions due to the fact that Russia does not fulfill its obligations, the Ukrainian people, and I am personally very grateful to you for this," Poroshenko said after the talks with Anastasiades in Kyiv on Friday.

According to him, the meeting discussed the coordination of efforts on the international arena, including in the framework of the UN.

"We have the opportunity to use the rostrum of the UN Security Council for the establishment of peace and stability in our state," Poroshenko said.

He also thanked the president of Cyprus for their firm support for the process of liberalization of the visa regime between Ukraine and the European Union.

In turn, the president of Cyprus noted the importance of implementing the Minsk agreement for the settlement of the situation in Donbas.

He also said that Cyprus would support Ukraine in its fight to preserve its territorial integrity and sovereignty. Cyprus will also support Ukraine on its path towards a visa-free regime with the EU.

"We hope that the promises of visa-free travel with the EU will come to life soon," Anastasiades said.
