U.S. not invited to join Normandy talks over Ukraine yet – Ambassador Tefft

The United States has yet to receive a request to join the "Normandy-format" talks over Ukraine, U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Tefft said on Wednesday.

When asked by Interfax to comment on the possibility of the U.S. joining the Normandy Group (France, Germany, Russia, Ukraine), the ambassador said there has been no such request to date but the U.S. is watching this process closely and supports it and wants to see full implementation of the Minsk agreements.

The idea of broadening the Normandy Group by getting U.S. President Barack Obama to join it was suggested by Tefft when he spoke on Ekho Moskvy radio on April 21.

The ambassador said he thought the president would gladly agree to participate in this process if he was invited to.

Tefft said that while he had no direct information from Obama over the U.S. president's attitude toward the possibility of working in the Normandy Group but assumed that Obama might approve.
