Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has addressed Ukrainians on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of Chornobyl disaster.

"Peaceful atom in a matter of seconds radically changed the course of human life, penetrated through state borders and made a part of the wonderful Ukrainian Polissia in the exclusion zone which became isolated from the world for many years," the president said in a statement posted on the president's website on Sunday.

He said that Chornobyl is a large human tragedy, the epicenter of which will remain on Ukrainian land.

The president has emphasized that Ukraine would always remember the feat of those who had saved the lives of people.

Poroshenko said that in the current difficult situation for Ukraine support of the world community in overcoming Chornobyl problems is especially important.

"We hope that jointly with countries-donors we will build a secure shelter over the destroyed reactor to protect Ukrainians, other people from the repetition of the tragedy of 1986," he said.
