Kyiv calls on UNESCO to condemn Russian seizure of Crimean Children's Center Artek

The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine has called on UNESCO to condemn the seizure of the international children's center Artek and its transfer to Russian federal ownership in occupied Crimea.

"We appeal to UNESCO, leading international organizations and the global community to condemn Russia's actions and to increase global pressure on Russia to ensure it immediately returns to observing international law, the cancellation of all illegal decisions that led to temporary occupation of Ukrainian territory, and compensation for losses and damages caused to Ukraine and its citizens," reads the statement published on the Foreign Ministry's website on Thursday.

The ministry also said that the Ukrainian Government and UNESCO had signed am agreement to grant Artek special Category Two status under the auspices of UNESCO in 2006.
