The Sverdlovsk region department of the Federal Security Service (FSB) has caught a Ukrainian citizen seeking to obtain scientific-technological information to the prejudice of Russian economic security, the department press service said.

"The Federal Security Service department learned about the collection of engineering and production documents from regional engineering plants by S. Skyrta, born in 1981, a representative of Ukraine's Poltava Turbo-Mechanical Plant, a unit of UkrRosMetall Concern," it said.

"The fact of the foreigner's contacts with employees of Russian plants were aimed at creating a permanent channel for obtaining documentation of interest to the foreign party for a fee was documented," the department reported.

The Ukrainian citizen was using methods of secrecy in the establishment and development of contacts with Russian citizens, it said.

The FSB department caught Skyrta in the act of receiving an initial package of high-tech energy equipment documentation in Yekaterinburg in late February.

"The plant said that the transfer of the documents to a foreign party could have caused hundreds of million rubles damage to the Russian manufacturer," the department said.

The investigative division of the Federal Security Service department in the Sverdlovsk region launched a criminal inquiry under part 3, article 183 of the Russian Criminal Code (illegal access and disclosure of commercial, tax or banking secrets). The detainee pleaded guilty and was placed under arrest for two months.
