U.S. continues discussion about new sanctions against Russia over Ukraine – Psaki

The U.S. authorities continue discussions about new possible sanctions against Russia over Ukraine and closely coordinates with European partners, U.S. Department of State spokesperson Jen Psaki said on Tuesday.

"As I've stated from here before, we've continued to have not just an interagency discussion about sanctions and other consequences, but also one with our European partners who we coordinate closely with," she said at a Tuesday briefing, answering a journalist's question about a comment on U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland's statement on Ukraine.

Nuland said earlier on Tuesday that the United States would lift sanctions imposed on Russia just after the full implementation of the Minsk agreements, however, she mentioned another option.

"But the reverse is also true. We have already begun consultations with our European partners on further sanctions pressure should Russia continue fuelling the fire in the east or other parts of Ukraine, fail to implement Minsk or grab more land as we saw in Debaltseve," she said.

Nuland also said she believes the strict observation of the Minsk deal will bring more peace, order and security to eastern Ukraine for the first time over the year.
