Kyiv: End of Russian support to self-proclaimed republics only way to de-escalation

Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister for European Integration Olena Zerkal has discussed the situation in eastern Ukraine with Director General of the European Commission Directorate General for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Christian Danielsson and Support Group for Ukraine leader Peter Balas.

"During the meeting, the European Commission representatives were informed about escalating tensions in eastern Ukraine and the need for preserving the unity and consolidated position of the European Union condemning the actions of the Russian Federation destabilizing our country was underlined," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported.

The only way to end the escalation of the conflict is to stop Russia's support to the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics and to avoid their additional demands regarding the fulfillment of the Minsk agreements, Zerkal said.

"The sides spoke about coordinated efforts in the arrangement of an international conference to support Ukraine and a final touch to the Ukraine restoration plan for 2015-2017," the ministry reported.
