Hasidic pilgrims not afraid of traveling to Ukraine - border guards

Some 2,200 Hasidic pilgrims have arrived in Ukraine to celebrate the 5775th Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah, Ukraine's State Border Guard Service said on Tuesday.

"Pilgrims from 25 countries are expected to arrive in Uman, Cherskasy region. Despite the uneasy situation in the east of the country, the Hasidics are not afraid of traveling to the grave of their spiritual leader Tzadik Nachman. Just over the past 24 hours Kyiv airports have processed 15 flights with more than 2,000 Hasidics. Today 25 flights with the devout are expected to arrive at these 'air gates' of our country," the Border Guard Service said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

Overall, around 25,000 pilgrims are expected to arrive in 2014, it said.

Most pilgrims, who travel in organized groups, cross the Ukrainian border not only at the Boryspil and Zhuliany (Kyiv) airports, but also at Odesa and Vinnytsia.

"Smaller organized groups travel through border checkpoints for cars and trains located on the grounds of the Lviv, Mostyska and Chernivtsi border detachments. Unorganized groups and individuals are expected at other checkpoints, in particular, those of the Mukacheve, Chop, Mohyliv-Podilsky, Kotovsk and Izmail border detachments," the statement said.

The festivities will take place in Uman on September 24-26.
