EU advises Ukraine ratify Association Agreement by October

Ukraine should independently decide when the Association Agreement with the EU should be ratified, a high-ranking European diplomat told Interfax-Ukraine.

"I don't think there are any agreements regarding the postponement of the ratification," he said.

There is no any time pressure for the ratification today, the diplomat said, however, Kyiv should take into consideration the fact that the autonomous trade preferences given to Ukraine in the form of cancellation of duties on Ukrainian commodities will expire on November 1, 2014.

"These autonomous trade preferences are supposed to be replaced with the Association Agreement. Thus, the ratification and notification about this should happen as late as in September," the diplomat said.

The EU may prolong the autonomous trade preferences for Ukraine, however, this could be quite complicated, as it should be done by a new European Parliament and European Commission.

Another high-ranking European diplomat told Interfax-Ukraine that the EU's approach to finding a solution to the situation related to Russia's position regarding the Association Agreement is pragmatic.

"We didn't find any dramatic problem, and our approach is very constructive, and we're open to cooperation and discussion in three different formats," he said, meaning bilateral consultations of the EU and Ukraine, the EU and Russia, and trilateral talks.
