Italy supports a peaceful resolution of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini said.

"On behalf of the Italian government I declare backing for the peace plan of the Ukrainian president. This is the only trail to follow in this situation," she told reporters in Kyiv on Tuesday after a meeting with her Ukrainian counterpart Pavlo Klimkin.

In the words of Mogherini, the primarily objective for now is to achieve a bilateral ceasefire, to gain control of the border and to release all the hostages.

She assured reporters that Italy was doing the utmost on the international scene for helping cease fire in eastern Ukraine. The minister said that would require a number of internal and external conditions.

The Italian foreign minister added that she would fly to Moscow on July 8 and "that sequence of the visits was not accidental." "We need to use political opportunities for solving the conflict," Mogherini said, adding that she would send the same ceasefire messages in Moscow.

The future of the Tripartite Contact Group for the settlement in eastern Ukraine will be decided within days, she said. "These days will show whether the contact group can converge," the minister underscored.
