G7: new sanctions against Russia may come into effect on April 28

The G7 group has agreed to introduce new sanctions against Russia over its actions in Ukraine, BBC reported on Saturday.

In its recent joint statement, the G7 supported Kyiv, saying that Ukraine has acted with restraint in dealing with the armed bands illegally occupying government buildings and forming illegal checkpoints in the country's eastern regions.

"In contrast, Russia has taken no concrete actions in support of the Geneva accord," the statement said.

A White House representative said that the new financial restrictions may become effective as early as on Monday, April 28.

Earlier, Washington announced readiness to introduce additional sanctions against Russia, but stressed that Moscow still has an opportunity to participate in the peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.

"The President [Barack Obama] noted that the United States is prepared to impose targeted sanctions to respond to Russia's latest actions," the White House said in a statement on Friday following the president's call with French President Hollande, German Chancellor Merkel, Italian Prime Minister Renzi, and British Prime Minister Cameron.
