Serhiy Taruta, the head of the Donetsk region's state administration, has suggested holding a nationwide referendum on the state system of Ukraine and the status of the Russian language on May 25 and beginning preparations for it by working on the wording of the questions now.

"People want a referendum, people should be able to hold it. I suggest holding it on May 25, the day of presidential elections in Ukraine," he said in a meeting with the heads of the cities, local councils, and district state administrations on Wednesday, the temporary website of the Donetsk region's state administration has reported.

Taruta's initiative was backed by all meeting participants, the report says.

"Now we need to begin the process of wording the questions for the referendum as soon as possible to ensure that all relevant parties agree on them," he said.

He recalled that the proposal to hold a nationwide referendum was voiced by Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk during his visit to Donetsk on April 11.

The presidential elections will be held in Ukraine on May 25.
